Why is a new airport necessary?

The Lohegaon Airforce Station is a heavily guarded & restricted international airport, hence there are less foreign flights there than what the city’s residents need. Additionally, having only one terminal has frequently been blamed for a number of aircraft delays and cancellations.

As a result, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) & the State government agreed that a new airport at Purandar was needed for international travel.

 

Information about the potential Purandar Airport

The next international airport, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje International Airport. Was authorised by the former Chief Minister of Maharashtra in 2016. And will be built at an estimated cost of Rs 14,000 crore. The new airport, which would be around 45 kilometres from the city, will cover an area of nearly 2,400 hectares. Of this, the State will possess about 1,300 hectares. The airport would provide service to roughly seven villages in the Purandar tehsil: Pargaon, Pisarve, Ambodi, Waghapur, Rajewadi, Memane, Rajodi & Jejuri.

As part of the project’s Public-Private Partnership (PPP) format, the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO) would hold a 51 percent stake and it will be treated as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV). The remaining share will be divided between the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) & the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), with MADC holding 19% and MIDC and PMRDA sharing 30%, respectively.

 

Difficulties with the New Pune Airport

The airport will have a specialized freight terminal as well as two parallel, around four kilometres each airstrip. The project’s location (Purandar) was temporarily altered before the No-Objection Certificate (NOC) of the new site was withdrawn. Even though the original four-year completion date was negatively impacted by changes in the state’s political climate.

It has been suggested that the current airport at Lohegaon soon get a second terminal in consideration of the effect that such a delay would have on local residents. The Lohegaon Airport’s current capacity of seven million passengers annually will more than double to around 16 million passengers annually according to the AAI. The project site will be connected to more than five major highways, including National Highways (NH) 4 and 17. Additionally, a route linking Bhosari & the new airport has been suggested for the Pune Metro. The area will also be served by the Rajewadi Railway Station.

The cargo terminal is anticipated to increase trade in Pune, Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, and Ahmednagar. Which might draw in a number of enterprises and create plenty of job possibilities.
