D Y Patil Cricket Stadium – A Home Ground For Mumbai Indians in IPL

D Y Patil Stadium is also known as D Y Patil Sports Stadium is a playground for state-of-the-art sports and recreational activities.  International Cricket and football matches are also played here in this stadium. Till now the stadium has hosted three IPL matches for Mumbai Indians and the 2008 Indian Premier League Final and 2010 Indian Premier League Final.

History of D Y Patil Cricket Stadium

The stadium was inaugurated on 4th March 2008 and is designed by one of the best Indian architects who has been awarded Padma Bhushan. The stadium is located at Nerul In Navi Mumbai and is the ninth-largest cricket stadium in India as well as among the best International stadiums in the world. D Y Patil Stadium is a home ground for Mumbai Indians during IPL.

DY Patil stadium is a home ground for ISL franchise Mumbai City FC from 2014. All the Mumbai city FC home matches are played here on this ground since then. The final match of Hero ISL 2014 was also hosted by this stadium, the match was played between Atlético de Kolkata and Kerala Blasters FC

The stadium also has hosted 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup matches and also the 2020 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final.

Moreover, D Y Patil stadium is also a host for inter-school cricket matches for D.Y Patil international schools every year.

This multi-sports playground has two practice grounds. The activities at DY Patil stadium are taken care of by the dedicated team of DY Patil Sports Academy.

D Y Patil Stadium Capacity

The stadium has a capacity of 55,000 people. However, an air-conditioned media center at the stadium can accommodate 120 people. There are 60 private corporate boxes on the upper level of the viewing galleries.

Stadium Roof

The D Y Patil stadium roof is made up of fabric that is imported from Germany. It is the cantilever roof that eliminates the need for pillars or columns which gives the audience a clear view without any obstacles. Cause of this reason the maximum space is utilized to make seating arrangements with a spectacular view of the ground and its key feature of this stadium. Also, it is India’s first and largest fabric roof.

Lighting

The masts at DY Patil stadium are the tallest in the country and provide excellent lighting throughout the ground. Moreover, the stadium is provided with high-quality illumination to ensure that the stadium is adequately bright. So that it is prepared for the latest television technologies such as HDTV (High Definition TV).

Two permanent diesel generators are installed so as to get an uninterrupted power supply during games. The 70 % of electrical supply for the stadium is generated by self, as this playground is well equipped with 500 KW solar plant.

Pitch and Outfield at D Y Patil Cricket Stadium

The cricket pitch at this D Y Patil cricket stadium was prepared with great efforts and dedication with the help of professional guidance of professors Neil Tainton and John Klug, also of South Africa. To make the ground of international standard 250 tons of clay was imported from South Africa.

Stadiums in India are mostly constructed with the outfields made out of red soil. But the red soil has a quality to become sluggish and heavy when there is heavy rainfall, which affects the cricket during monsoon season.  To minimize the interruption due to rain, the outfield at DY Patil cricket stadium is purposely made with sand-based soil.

This Nerul cricket stadium also has other sports facilities such as 9 tennis hard courts, 4 indoor badminton courts, and an Olympic-sized swimming pool.
