Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train: All River Bridges Completed Between Vapi & Surat
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project, widely known as the Ahmedabad-Mumbai Bullet Train, has reached an important milestone. All nine river bridges between Vapi & Surat stations have now been completed, representing a significant step forward in the development of this high-speed rail network.

This milestone, reported on Sunday, demonstrates the project’s continuous progress. The most recently finished bridge spans the Kharera River in Gujarat’s Navsari district. It joins 11 other constructed river bridges in the state, bringing the total to 12 of the 20 planned for the Gujarat section of the bullet train route.
Kharera River Bridge Details
The recently finished Kharera River bridge is a significant structure of 120 metres in length. It is supported by three robust girders, each 40 metres long. The bridge’s pillars are tall, measuring 14.5 to 19 metres in height. Interestingly, one of the pillars has a unique circular design with a diameter of four metres, which adds a different touch to the bridge’s attractiveness. The remaining three pillars have conventional diameters of five metres apiece.
The Kharera River Bridge is strategically positioned between the Vapi and Bilimora stations, around 45 kilometres from Vapi and only six kilometres from Bilimora. This new crossing is a critical link in the growing bullet train network. And it is one of numerous bridges built to cross the rivers that run along the route.
Beyond Vapi & Surat
While the new announcement focusses on the Vapi-Surat portion, other elements of the project are still under construction. Three more river crossings have been completed outside of this zone:
- Dhadhar River Bridge, Vadodara District
- Mohar River Bridge, Kheda District
- Vatrak River Bridge (Kheda District).
A Bridge to the Future.
The completion of these river bridges represents further progress on the ambitious Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project. This 508-kilometre route intends to transform high-speed rail travel in India by linking the country’s two largest economic regions, Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
Once operational, bullet trains will run at speeds greater than 320 kilometres per hour. Dramatically cutting travel time between the two cities. A traditional train travel currently takes about six hours, but with the advent of bullet trains, that time will be reduced to just two hours.
This project, carried out in conjunction with Japan, marks a significant step forward in India’s infrastructure development. It is projected to improve regional connections, boost economic growth, and create new job opportunities, notably in Gujarat & Maharashtra.
The MAHSR project is envisioned to be a game changer, ushering in a new era of safe, efficient, & high-speed rail transport for Indian citizens. It also establishes Indian Railways as a major player on the global scene in terms of reach, speed, & technological sophistication.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail route runs across the rapidly developing states of Gujarat & Maharashtra, connecting major commercial areas such as Mumbai, Surat, Vadodara, and Ahmedabad. The sanctioned cost for this ambitious project is Rs 1,08,000 crore.
