Mumbai: different sheds for Metro 3 and 6, some facilities for sharing

Separate car sheds will be accessible at Kanjurmarg for Lines 3 and 6, Commissioner R A Rajeev of the Metropolitan Area Development Authority (MMRDA) of Mumbai said on October 12, adding that certain facilities will be popular, 1 bhk flat for rent in kharghar.

Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL), which operates the underground Metro route, will construct the car shed for Line 3, while MMRDA will construct the depot for Line 6.

Different depots have been suggested as the lines have separate funding sources and MMRCL is well aware of Line 3 specifications, Rajeev said.

Rajeev said that Metro 3 is scheduled to be commissioned by the end of 2022 or early 2023, adding that Rs 400 crore, including Rs 100 crore invested in Aarey, would be the highest cost increase. “To combine two routes, for which investment is projected to be Rs 100 crore, and some more on the depot, about one km route needs to be built. This expense is considerably lower than Rs 4,000 crore, calculated by the panel if the car shed is relocated to Kanjurmarg,” he added.

“The cost is not high because the total cost of the Line 3 project has risen from Rs 23,000 crore to Rs 33,000-34,000 crore. In 2-3 months, we will float tenders for Line 6. MMRCL will float separate tenders for the Line 3 depot,” he said. Work on the Line 3 depot will take longer to begin, as a comprehensive project report must be written by MMRCL.

Meanwhile, Aarey activists at a press conference asked that former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis produce papers to demonstrate that the conspiracy assigned to Lines 3 and 6 carsheds in Kanjurmarg is challenged. Activist Zoru Bhathena said the suburban collector had said the plot was undisputed in 2016 in an affidavit before the Bombay High Court. “We have records that prove that the state government owns it,” he said.

Activist Priya Mishra said the tender released by MMRCL estimated the expense at Rs 340 crore on the Rs 400 crore spent on the building of the car-shed at Aarey being wasted. “I hope that the former CM can clear the allegations that Rs 400 crore was expended on the depot,” Mishra said.

Architect Nitin Killawala said that after the government of Maha Vikas Aghadi wanted to move the metro car shed of Line 3 to Kanjurmarg and merge Lines 3 with 6, it would create an ideal route for merged lines.

He said the combined lines should be routed along SevenHills Hospital, Saki Vihar, Chandivli, Hiranandani Hospital, then underground at Radisson junction, and to the depot at Kanjurmarg instead of heading along Powai lake promenade. Strong ridership will be assured, he added.
