Major projects: MMRDA

MMRDA will expand the eastern motorway to Thane

According to a report in the Indian Express, the MMRDA has decided to expand the Eastern Motorway from Chheda Nagar junction to Thane via elevated roads in Kamraj Nagar, Ramabai Colony and Ghatkopar. This will make it easier for South Mumbai residents to go to Thane. The Eastern Motorway now runs from P D’mello Road in South Mumbai to Shivaji Nagar in Chembur and has two lanes going north and two going south. The Eastern Motorway was supposed to be extended until Ghatkopar in accordance with the original plan, but it was postponed due to the destruction of mangroves & a slum pocket that got in the way of the project. But this issue is now rectified.

Mumbai Metro

MMRDA has set out Rs 6,250 crore for Metro projects in the MMR in its budget for 2022–2023.

Nine metro routes are now being constructed as part of MMRDA, which will reduce travel times between some of the major centres and ease traffic congestion between the region’s western & eastern suburbs. The MMRDA Mumbai Metro Lines are as follows:

VersovaAndheri-Ghatkopar, Line 1

Line 2A: DN Nagar-Dahisar

DN Nagar-Mandale, line 2B

Wadala-Kasarvadavali, line 4.

Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan, Line 5

Line 6: Kanjurmarg, Lokhandwala, Jogeshwari, and Vikhroli

Line 7: Dahisar East-Andheri East

Extension of Line 7, running from Andheri to the Mumbai Airport and from Dahisar to Mira Bhayandar, is Line 9.

Monorail in Mumbai

India’s first monorail system, the Mumbai Monorail, connects Chembur in the east with Jacob Circle in the south. It was construct as a feeder service to the current Mumbai suburban railway line at a cost of Rs 3,000 crores. The line’s official opening took place in February 2014. The idea of extending the Mumbai monorail to Worli is currently being considered.

Trans-Harbour Link in Mumbai

The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link is currently being built, and the MMRDA has allocated Rs 3,270 crore for it in accordance with the budget for 2022–2023. The Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link Road, also known as the Nhava-Shewa Link Road, which was intended to improve communication between south Mumbai and Navi Mumbai and relieve congestion in the island metropolis, has not yet been completed. The project’s inauguration is expected to take place in 2022 while development is still going on. This will be the longest sea bridge in India.

Alibaug to Virar multimodal corridor

This route will provide the much-needed connectivity to link the seven growth corridors of the MMR, which include Virar, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Dombivali, Panvel, Taloja, and Uran. The route is planned as a 126-km corridor to link the NH-8, the Bhiwandi bypass, the NH-3, the NH-4 & NH-4B, the Mumbai-Pune Motorway, the NH-17, etc.

Sahar Elevated Road

This route, which was finished in 2014, connects the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport immediately to the Western Express Highway. This route was design as a result of the international airport’s lack of direct access and the steady growth in traffic heading there.

Eastern Freeway

It was intend for the motorway project to enable seamless connection between south Mumbai, Thane-Nashik, and Panvel-Pune. This route eliminates traffic signals and shortens the distance between the island city & the suburbs. It was made available to the general public in 2013 and is 16.9 kilometres long.
