Navi Mumbai Airport’s History

A committee was established by the MoCA (Ministry of Civil Aviation) to evaluate various sites for the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport extension, which was conceive of in 1997. In 2000, the group proposed a Mandwa-Rewas site, which CIDCO later modified and submitted to the MoCA in a feasibility report. As a result, a location in Navi Mumbai was found by the subcommittee of the AAI (Airports Authority of India) that was more technically and operationally feasible. They then advise that a thorough feasibility study of the proposal be conduct by CIDCO.

In 2001, CIDCO submitted to the government the Techno-Economic Feasibility Study (TEFS) for the project to build the Navi Mumbai International Airport. After that, the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) carried out a simulation study that determined that, with the right procedures, Mumbai could operate two airports simultaneously.

Having received clearance from the Union Cabinet in July 2007, CIDCO presented a Project Feasibility & Business Plan for this project to the MoCA in February 2007. The Maharashtra Government authorised the Public Private Partnership (PPP) development of the Navi Mumbai International Airport in 2008 and named CIDCO as the main organisation for its execution.
