RBI Withdraw Rs. 2,000 Notes From Circulation

RBI Withdraw Rs.2000 Notes : Additionally, the banks have been instructed by the apex bank to immediately stop issuing these currency notes.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) stated on Friday that the Rs 2,000 notes will be removed from circulation from May 19. Users would have until September 30, 2023, to deposit or exchange these notes for notes of other denominations.   The Rs. 2,000 notes will continue to be valid till that time and can be used in any transaction.

“It has also been noted that transactions with this denomination are uncommon. Additionally, the supply of banknotes in other denominations is still sufficient to fulfil the public’s demand for cash. It has been decided to remove the Rs 2,000 denomination banknotes from circulation, the Reserve Bank of India stated in a statement late Friday. This decision was made in accordance with the “Clean Note Policy” of the RBI.

Approximately 89% of the Rs 2,000 bank notes were printed before March 2017 and are nearing the end of their four to five year expected lives. According to the statement, the total value of these banknotes in circulation has decreased from Rs 6.73 lakh crore, which represented 37.3% of notes in circulation on March 31, 2018, to Rs 3.62 lakh crore, which will make up just 10.8% of notes in circulation on March 31, 2023.

“After sufficient supplies of notes in other denominations were available, the goal of launching Rs 2,000 banknotes was achieved. As a result, the production of Rs 2,000 banknotes was discontinued in 2018–19, according to the RBI.

RBI Withdraw Rs.2000 Notes : Effect of the ban on Rs. 2,000 notes

The RBI’s abrupt action has drawn praise and condemnation from a variety of sources. The measure would help in limiting black money to a “great extent,” according to former RBI deputy governor R Gandhi, as individuals are hoarding the high-value currency.

A top official of Financial Software and Systems said that since ATMs haven’t been dispensing Rs 2,000 notes in a while, the RBI’s abrupt action won’t cause any issues for them.
