Test Of Aggregates : Meaning, Testing Methods & Importance

Test Of Aggregates  :- Aggregate tests are performed to determine aggregate quality.

Aggregates are the most fundamental building component. Aggregates are a class of raw materials used in construction that are combined with mediums such as water, clay, bitumen, and so on to form building compounds such as Portland cement, plaster cement, and bituminous concrete. Typically composed of 92-96% bituminous concrete and 70-80% Portland cement.

Aggregates are also used in the construction of sidewalks and pavements, including the sub-base and base courses used in both rigid and flexible pavements. Aggregates can be found naturally or manufactured in factories, depending on the use case.

Natural aggregates are typically extracted from larger rock formations using a quarry. The extracted rock is then broken down into usable sizes and mechanically crushed. The majority of manufactured or artificially occurring aggregate is created as a byproduct of other manufacturing and industrial processes.

Properties of aggregates

Strength: When it comes to choosing the right materials for your aggregate, especially when making the topmost layers for roads and pavements to withstand stress action due to traffic wheel load, wear and tear, and crushing, strength is an important factor. In order to build high-quality pavements, the aggregate should be more resistant to crushing and able to withstand greater amounts of stress.

Hardness: Because of traffic stress, the aggregates used to make surface layers are constantly abraded and rubbed. Ideally, the aggregate’s hardness should be sufficient to withstand the damage caused by moving traffic, particularly steel-tyred vehicles.

Toughness: Toughness refers to the aggregate surface’s ability to withstand impact forces. Aggregates used in pavements should ideally be able to withstand the impact of steel-tyred heavyweight vehicles on various levels.

Aggregates must also be able to withstand the harsh forces of nature. Soundness refers to an aggregate’s ability to withstand adverse weather action.

Adhesion: Bitumen adhesion is a critical property to consider when selecting the right aggregate.

Aggregate testing

Aggregates are a critical component of surface strength and durability, and are selected based on the needs of a project. There are several methods for testing an aggregate to determine its properties and viability for a project.

Aggregate crushing test

A pavement is bound to fail under compression of a load it cannot handle, which may result in a public disaster and is unquestionably hazardous.

As a result, an aggregate crushing test is performed to determine the structural soundness and crushing strength of the aggregate. The aggregate crushing value provides a comparative indication of the resistance to crushing under a gradually applied crushing load. A crushing test should ideally have a value of 30% for roads and pavements and 45% for other projects.

Abrasion examination

The abrasion test focuses on the hardness of the aggregate and helps determine whether or not a particular aggregate is suitable for use in construction. The Los Angeles abrasion test is the most commonly used aggregate abrasion test and has been adopted as the aggregate hardness test in India.

Impact examination

The impact test of aggregates determines an aggregate’s resistance to impact forces.

Test for soundness

The soundness test is used to determine the resistance of aggregates to weather-related wear and tear. This is accomplished by simulating weather cycles. Porous aggregates that are repeatedly frozen and thawed are more likely to disintegrate prematurely. In order to select the highest quality aggregate, such aggregates are subjected to a series of soundness tests to increase their durability.

Test Of Aggregates  – Shape examinations

An aggregate, whether naturally occurring or man-made, contains flaky or elongated parts. These flaky components contribute to the aggregate’s flakiness. Aggregates with a higher flakes content appear to be detrimental to mix workability and stability. This is referred to as the flakiness index.

The elongation index of an aggregate is another metric that helps determine its stability. An aggregate’s elongation index is defined as the percentage index by weight of particles whose greatest dimension is 1.8 times their mean dimension. This test only applies to aggregates larger than 6.3mm in size.

Test Of Aggregates  – Water absorption and specific gravity tests

The specific gravity and water absorption of aggregates must be considered when designing concrete and bituminous mixes. The specific gravity of a solid is determined by its mass in relation to an equivalent amount of distilled water at a given temperature. There is a chance that the aggregates contain water-permeable voids. To avoid this, two measures of aggregate specific gravity, known as apparent specific gravity and bulk specific gravity, are used.

The apparent specific gravity, on the other hand, is calculated using the net volume of aggregates or the volume of aggregates excluding the water-permeable voids.

Bulk-specific gravity, on the other hand, is calculated using the aggregates’ total volume, including water-permeable voids.

Test for bitumen adhesion

Bitumen is a well-known and widely used compound in construction. It is critical to consider bitumen adherence in cold and wet conditions when selecting the best aggregate for a given use case. This test is conclusive of aggregate adhesion when wet and cold.

Test Of Aggregates  – Importance of aggregate testing

Aggregates are compound mixtures that are most commonly used in public civil projects. Thorough testing of aggregates is critical because the quality of an aggregate determines the quality of the concrete that will be used in a specific project, and thus the structural integrity of that project. It is one of the most important components of concrete, contributing to its form and structure.
