The access-controlled Delhi Mumbai Expressway will link Mumbai, the financial centre of India, with New Delhi, the country’s capital. The project was started on March 8, 2019, and it is expected to cost about INR 1,00,000 crores in total, including land acquisition. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) also intends to build a 31-km-long spur along this Expressway from Noida International Airport in Jewar to Sector-65 in Faridabad.
About the Vadodara Mumbai Expressway
According to the Bharatmala Pariyojana project, the projected Vadodara Mumbai Expressway will play a significant role in western India’s transportation network. The Expressway’s construction will cost about INR 44,000 Crores in total. As the capacity of the existing roads between Mumbai & Vadodara has been reached, a fully regulated motorway is being suggested. It will contribute to the creation of a smooth and effective transportation system for all logistics and mobility needs.
The Expressway will link Gujarat, the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli, and Maharashtra by closely following the current NH-8. The Expressway will be built with six lanes initially for about 90 km, with the possibility of adding up to eight lanes afterwards. The majority of the Expressway’s remaining length will be constructed as an eight-lane highway.
This expressway’s main goal is to enable continuous, uninterrupted traffic flow and shorten travel times between Mumbai & Vadodara. Presently, it takes 10 to 12 hours to travel the 550 kilometres (or thereabouts) between JNPT Port Mumbai & Vadodara. The Mumbai-Vadodara motorway, however, will cut the distance in half to just 379 kilometres, resulting in a 3.5 to5hour reduction in travel time. Costs associated with transportation, logistics, and fuel can all be reduced thanks to the excellent pavement quality and ease of access at high speeds.
The development of this motorway is also anticipated to stimulate the socioeconomic development of the surrounding region and propel the expansion of numerous industries, including those producing textiles, gems, jewellery, petrochemicals, fertilisers, as well as other goods. The well-known Delhi Mumbai Expressway will be built from the Vadodara Mumbai and Vadodara Delhi motorways, making it a vital transit route for expanding India.
Route of the Vadodara-Mumbai Highway: Important Information
The important points of the Vadodara Mumbai Expressway route are given below:
- The motorway is intended to have a 120 km/h speed restriction.
- Boundary walls or fencing on either side to keep domestic animals, cattle, and wildlife out of the motorway.
- The outer edge of the paved shoulders on both carriageways will have 3 m-wide earthen shoulders.
- A total of 48 km of service roads will be built where they are required.
- There will be a closed-type tolling system in place for collecting tolls.
- The motorway will contain 34 toll booths, two of which will be the primary toll booths and the rest will be on ramps or loops.
- The highway alignment’s intended Right of Way (ROW) is 100/120 metres.
- The Hybrid Annuity Model will be used for the construction process.
- The Expressway will be constructed over a tall dam that is over three metres high.
- For the 8-lane portion, the Expressway’s median will be 12 metres wide.
- The median will be depressed type 19.5m for the tiny section of the 6-lane region, taking future growth into account.

Conclusion: Vadodara-Mumbai Highway
A ground-breaking infrastructure project, the Vadodara Mumbai Expressway will transform how people and goods are transported between Vadodara and Mumbai. The quality of life for citizens of both cities is expected to improve as a result of the Expressway’s construction by lowering air pollution and traffic congestion levels. In addition to shortening travel times between the two cities, it will support the growth of numerous industrial and commercial hubs along the route. The Expressway will serve as a model for other projects of its kind in the future by establishing a new standard in road construction.
