Pune to Mumbai Expressway: Capacity
One of the busiest arterial roads in India is the 94-kilometer Mumbai-Pune Expressway, which connects Pune, Maharashtra’s automobile manufacturing and educational hub, with Mumbai, the country’s financial centre. The motorway currently carries about 60,000 vehicles daily.
Pune to Mumbai Expressway:
The Maharashtra government hired Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) in 1990 to create a feasibility assessment for the Mumbai Pune Highway project with the intention of starting the project. In 1997, Nitin Gadkari, then-minister of Maharashtra’s Public Works Department (PWD), suggested a route for the Mumbai-Pune Expressway that would connect Kon (near Panvel) and Dehu Road (near Pune). The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) was subsequently given the job of constructing the Mumbai–Pune Expressway.
Project costs for the Mumbai-Pune Expressway
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway, regarded as India’s first motorway project, was finished in 1999 with a price tag of approximately Rs 1,600 crores. But, it wasn’t until 2002 that the motorway, also known as India’s first on-time road project, was finished in its entirety.
Toll on the Mumbai-Pune motorway in 2023
From April 1, 2023, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway will have an 18% increase in tolls thanks to the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). Toll collecting issues on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway
Even though an audit by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) found that the entire capital outlay of the Expressway was recovered in 2019, a public interest lawsuit was filed in the Bombay High Court in 2020 challenging the extension of toll collection on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway until April 2030.
In response, the MSRDC claimed that the CAG audit was erroneous because it failed to account for a number of expenditure-related factors.
Mumbai-Pune Expressway: Maximum speed
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway has a speed limit of 80 kmph even though the project was intended for speeds of much over 120 kmph.
Mumbai Pune Expressway: Missing link
The present alignment of the NH-4 has to be followed by extending it to six lanes because the alignment between Khopoli and Lonavala could not be built owing to viability gap funding concerns. As a result, there are significant traffic bottlenecks in this area where traffic from the NH-4 and the Expressway combine.
The “missing link,” a 13.3-km alternative path with eight lanes, has been developed to remedy this problem. It will begin at Raigad’s Khopoli Exit and conclude at the Sinhagad Institution close to Lonavala (Pune). The COVID-19 epidemic has forced the MSRDC to postpone the project’s completion date until 2023 because work on it has been delayed. The “missing link” will cut the distance between Mumbai and Pune by around six kilometres and the overall travel time on the motorway by 25 minutes once it is fully operational.

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway will soon have an advanced traffic control system due to an increase in accidents, fatalities, and frequent traffic congestion.
An artificial intelligence programme known as the intelligent traffic management system is connected to sophisticated cameras, sensors, and other traffic infraction detection devices that are mounted on highways. The system will update traffic authorities at the central command centre in real-time and assist in monitoring traffic infractions.The system would cost Rs 160 crores over a ten-year period to build and is being done through a public-private partnership.
