One of the busiest arterial roads in India is the 94-kilometer Mumbai-Pune Expressway, which connects Pune, Maharashtra’s automobile manufacturing and educational hub, with Mumbai, the country’s financial centre. The motorway currently carries about 60,000 vehicles daily.

The Maharashtra government hired Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) in 1990 to create a feasibility assessment for the Mumbai Pune Highway project with the intention of starting the project. Toll collecting issues on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway
Even though an audit by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) found that the entire capital outlay of the Expressway was recovered in 2019, a public interest lawsuit was filed in the Bombay High Court in 2020 challenging the extension of toll collection on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway until April 2030.
In response, the MSRDC claimed that the CAG audit was erroneous because it failed to account for a number of expenditure-related factors.

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway has a speed limit of 80 kmph even though the project was intended for speeds of much over 120 kmph.

The “missing link,” a 13.3-km alternative path with eight lanes, has been developed to remedy this problem. It will begin at Raigad’s Khopoli Exit and conclude at the Sinhagad Institution close to Lonavala (Pune). The COVID-19 epidemic has forced the MSRDC to postpone the project’s completion date until 2023 because work on it has been delayed. The “missing link” will cut the distance between Mumbai and Pune by around six kilometres and the overall travel time on the motorway by 25 minutes once it is fully operational.
